What’s Under the Bonnet?
The Ford Transit has a choice between either a single petrol or three different diesels. The petrol engine option is the 1.0 L EcoBoost turbo 100hp three-cylinder that uses cylinder deactivation technology to reduce the engine to using only two cylinders in slow or light driving conditions then switching back to three when more power is needed. The petrol engine is not expected to be the most popular as it can lack power, but it is excellent for fuel economy in heavy traffic, especially if driven in almost exclusively low-speed urban and town settings. While there’s little market in the UK for petrol engines in vans, the Ford Transit Connect 1.0 L EcoBoost isn’t to be dismissed without consideration. The much more popular diesel 1.5 L engines come with three different horsepower options with 75hp, 100hp or 120hp. The diesel engines are powerful, responsive, and better suited to motorway driving than the petrol counterpart. All Transit Connect vans come with a six-speed manual transmission as standard, with an eight-speed automatic also available on some models. For those enduring constant stop-start traffic or facing very low speed driving for the bulk of the day, the automatic transmission could be very appealing.
Small Van with a Big Backside
Load capacity and cargo space are often the main deciding factors when choosing a new van. It’s crucial to choose a van that can get the job done without paying for the extra fuel costs involved in constantly keeping unused space moving. The Ford Transit Connect is a compact van that can accommodate anything many sole traders or small businesses would ask of it. The Transit Connect comes with a choice of two different wheelbase lengths, the short wheelbase L1 and the long wheelbase L2, with different maximum payloads for each variant, depending on the engine choice. All Transit Connects have a loading area height from floor to roof of 1,269mm. Because cargo volume is so crucial, we’ve included all the dimensions for both wheelbase variants to help with choosing which could be the most suitable. We know it’s a lot of numbers to read, but if you’re trying to calculate if your equipment, tools, or regular cargo can fit, those dimensions are here to help you.
Ford Transit Connect Short Wheelbase L1
The shorter wheelbase - SWB L1 - has a loading volume of 2.9 cubic metres, with a maximum loading length of 1,786mm and a loading height of 1,269mm. The loading width is 1,538mm for the standard L1 (SWB). A Ford Transit Connect that is fitted with the optional load-through capability in the bulkhead can hold loads of up to 3000mm long. That’s a lot of cargo space for such a compact van which has an exterior that’s 4,418mm long and is only 2,137mm wide with the side mirrors fully extended. Even within the SWB L1 models, there is a significant variation in the payload depending on the engine and seating choices.
The base model L1 200 panel van has a respectable maximum payload of 579kg-718kg, engine capacity dependent. The L1 220 High Payload model is a marked upgrade in terms of payload with a maximum range of 822kg-865kg, once again, this depends on the engine. The Ford Connect Transit L1 DCiV (Double Cab in Van) 220 sits between the two other SWB offerings with a maximum payload range of 736kg-782kg with the specific maximum reliant on the engine chosen. The loading volume and loading area dimensions are significantly lower on the DCiV variant with a 1.2 cubic metre load volume and a maximum load length of 845mm. This means the DCiV is more suited to carrying compact yet heavy loads, rather than the lengthier loads accommodated in the Ford Transit Connect L1(SWB).
Transit Connect Long Wheelbase L2
The longer wheelbase – LWB L2 – has an impressive loading volume of 3.6 cubic metres which is good when carrying larger volume loads while still needing a compact van. The loading area has a length of 2,152mm which can extend up to a very lengthy 3.4 metres using the load-through bulkhead. Again, the load-carrying area is surprising when considering the exterior dimensions are 4,818mm in length and 2,137mm in width. Payload ranges for the Ford Transit Connect L2 variants start at 680kg for the standard topping out at 834kg for the L2 High Payload 220. The L2 DCiV has a maximum payload of 741kg that, once again, sits between the standard and high payload variants. The DCiV has a loading volume of 1.6 cubic metres that increases to 2.4 cubic metres with the rear seats folded and the load length maximum is 1,072. The DCiV is good for carrying both people and loads that are heavy yet compact. Most Transit Connects are able to tow up to 750kg on an unbraked trailer, with some models able to tow up to 1,300kg on a braked trailer, depending on the wheelbase and engine selected. The towing maximums apply even when carrying the full payload.
